Making time for friends - High Tea....

So a few weeks ago I made the decision that I needed to schedule some more regular time with people who are important to me and who are believers in my future. So quite spontaneously I sent out an invite to a bunch of the girls in my world to come to a High Tea at my place. It was for whoever could make it - no pressure. The plan was to just hang out and enjoy each other's company, and if the mood took us there I had a little something creative planned.

We were a small group - just the four of us but we had a lovely time drinking tea and chatting. And as it happened the mood took us there and we did something a little creative. It was fun. We had our own weaving tutorial and weaved colourful stars for the one million stars to end violence project.

It was really great everyone had a go and for some it was probably the first time that they had done something like that. We made 10 stars to contribute to the project. A small contribution but a contribution all the same. Not a bad effort really, as some of us were attempting to drink tea, have adult conversations, weave and ensure our children were not getting up to anything to terrifying.

It was a definite success. What could be better than friends, tea, sweet treats, good conversation and some thing a little creative - food for the soul? What's more it was all too easy, just a spontaneous text, some food and a little creative idea. So now I have committed to do this once a month, because friends and food for the soul are important.

3 Quick Tips To Ensure You Never Have to Do Life Alone...

Sometimes life can feel so full that there just doesn't seem to be time for everything. Most often it is our friends that disappear from our schedule when we are under pressure.  Here are 3 quick tips for ensuring that despite a full life, you don't do life alone:

1. Schedule time in your week for your friends.
Even the most introverted of us is built for relationship and can't do life alone. We all need people in our world to come along side us and help us along our journey.

If we want to maintain and grow our friendships despite our full lives then we need to prioritise them. The simplest way to give friendships the importance they deserve is to give them time. Being proactive and blocking out time in your weekly schedule for friendships and relationships is really the only way of ensuring they are prioritised. Book in a weekly coffee slot in your diary. Protect it and ensure you invite a different friend every week. Schedule a walk with someone who is important to you. You will get to chat and check in on each other and exercise. Everyone wins.

The key is scheduling regular time for touching base with those who are important to you. Because if you are not intentional in prioritising this time, there will always be demands that will take your unscheduled time.

2. Be the kind of friend you would like to have.
If you are under pressure and life is full, and you are wishing someone would notice you are under the pump. Perhaps the best medicine is to be 'that friend' for some one else. We all have people in our world who we know could do with a cheer squad. Be 'that person' for them. Send a text to cheer on that friend who is juggling study, work, family and other commitments. Tell the them how much they inspire you. Tell them they are doing a really great job and that you are heaps proud of them.

Its funny how being 'that friend' is a great way to get our eyes off our own woes. Moreover if we are generous with encouragement it is reasonably likely that we will find ourselves the recipient of encouragement too.

3. Make the thought count.
Too often we think about doing stuff and then that is all it ever is - a thought. We get distracted with our day and don't call that person that we thought of, don't send that text we had planned to or forget to write that card. I know that I seriously need to get better at actioning those thoughts straight away. It is easier said then done though. But it does help if you are intentional in setting up a few things in your life. You could invest in a hands free phone kit in your car. I often think of calling people when I am driving places. And obviously unless you have a hands free kit you can't call them. Then as soon as you get where you are going you forget to make that call.

I now carry a little snap lock bag of blank greeting cards in my handbag with some postage stamps so if I think sending someone a card I have no excuse not to send it - as everything I need is always with me. We totally need to bring back the handwritten card. Who doesn't love receiving something other than bills in the mail. And despite the price increase in postage stamps, your friends are worth the dollar, right?

There are probably many many more things that we can do to ensure we don't do life alone, these are just 3 quick tips. What tips do you have to prioritising those who are important to you?

Make the Special Days Special....

So Mother's Day has just been and I am privileged to do life surrounded by people who exemplify a culture of making the special days special. And I love that.

This has not always been my natural tendency nor my experience. I didn't grow up in a family that had a bunch of family traditions when it came to celebrating special occasions. We certainly celebrated those special days but always with minimal fuss and fanfare.

As I have grown and particularly as I have developed and grown in my role as I parent I have learnt that family traditions start, end or continue with me. As the mother of my household in lots of ways I set the tone and culture in my house. I get to create or break with family tradition.

I have always loved the idea of family traditions. Perhaps because there were so few in my growing up. I am finding more and more that positive family traditions have a play a key role to play in building and contributing to the fabric of a healthy family. A family tradition that I am definitely labouring to establish in our family is the idea of making the special days special.

This really doesn't need to be about spending money which is often the first place we go to in our mind. I think this idea is part of the reason why often young families don't establish this idea as a foundational family value.

Really, the idea of making the special days special is about placing value. It simply requires a little creativity and giving mostly of yourself and your time to show, that person that you love, they are important to you!

Mother's Day has come and gone but I'm sure like my family you have a birthday or two or ten just around the corner. What can you be creating, planning or doing to make those special days special for that someone you love? How can you make the next special day the first of many, building a culture in your family of placing value on those you love?

'Been Here Before... and isn't it awesome!'

"I have been here before and isn't it awesome!" Bobbie Houston

I'm am trying really hard this week to take that saying and make it my reality. This week it is my birthday and 'I have been here before' definitely applies to me. I have been here 37 times before in fact. And if I am honest the excitement that once surrounded birthdays is long gone. These days it's far more like dread.

I don't really love the self reflection that always comes with birthdays these days either. As usually it means finding far to many areas of your life that are really not how you would like them to be or how you once envisaged they would be at this stage of your life.

When you are young birthdays are always filled with so much promise and potential. These days that is not usually how I feel about birthdays.

But as with so much of life - our attitude frames our experience. I am trying really hard not to let my attitude put a dampener on this birthday. I am trying to remember that ' I have been here before - but isn't it awesome!'

I may not be as young as I once was, or as fit or as skinny or as.... but I am wiser than I have ever been and life still has so much promise and potential. I have been here before but it is awesome!

I think Gratitude is the key.

For me I need to remind myself that there is usually far more to be thankful for than there is to complain about- even during a rough season. My natural tendency is to get caught up in what is not where or how I anticipated it should be and I forget to take stock of all that is right, and good and lovely; all that is awesome in my life.

So this birthday, this 37th birthday I am trying - I'm going to be grateful for all the amazing blessings I have in my life. I am going to acknowledge that 'I have been here before' .... But isn't it awesome!

One Million Stars...

Peppermint Magazine is one my favourite magazines! I love everything about it. I love that it champions artisans and I love that it encourages sustainability and a social conscience.

So recently I came across an old edition of the magazine from last year and was so super inspired I had to share it with you. The theme for the Winter 2015 edition was 'Be Kind'. Love it already!

The magazine was filled with super inspiring stories of people doing amazing things to help others. But one of the stories in particular just grabbed me. The story introduced us to Maryann Talia Pau, founder of the One Millions Stars Project. A project that was birthed out of a response to the murder of Jill Meagher, in Victoria, Australia. Maryann's studio and church were in the local area and witnessing the grief and helplessness she responded in the most natural way she could which was to weave. As an artist and a weaver, Maryann spoke without words and weaved symbols of light and hope. The One Million Stars to End Violence project was born.

"There is still reason to be light in the world.

There is still opportunity to have courage and to speak up or protect someone who needs it."

Maryann Talia Pau

I loved this story so much. I love that one lady saw a situation - an absolute injustice and acted. She didn't allow herself to just be moved, she acted. And she acted in a way that came most natural to her. Well after reading this article, I was totally inspired. This is the kind of life I want to live. This to me is living creatively.

So I have been weaving stars.... And you can join in too and raise awareness against violence. To check out the article in Peppermint Magazine for yourself Click Here. Or use the link below to start your own WEave100 Community or find our more about the One Millions Stars to End Violence Project.

"I'm learning that compassion and kindness are random. I wish there was more of it in the world, but I  realise that you just have to be those things yourself and it will inspire and give others the courage to do the same. I think compassion and kindness will people to take risks, which is a far more fulfilling way to live."   Maryann Talia Pau

What are your goal words for 2016?

Think long weekend.
Think away by the beach for the first time in a long time.
Think a much needed break.
All the right ingredients for the inspiration and the conviction needed to relaunch my blog....

It has been several months since that weekend and I have made many excuses since that initial moment of inspiration to say that it was all to hard. But here I am!

That's right I'm back in blog land. Only this time I'm Beautifully Recreated! Ironic right? I am more convinced than ever that I need to document my journey to live a creative life. As the creative life is the life that I know I'm meant to live, the life I was made for.

Living a creative life has been my hearts conviction for a lot of years now. But all too often I have allowed the pursuit of temporary things to distract me from 'BEING' my true self. As I get older I am discovering that it takes discipline and lots of it, to be your true self. It is much easier to be who society or circumstances dictate you should be. And there are also many things, often important things, that we use as an excuse or reasons for why we can't or don't have time to practice being all that we are called to be.

So here I am working on the discipline and practice of living a creative life.

It is always amusing how events and circumstances align. Here we are at the beginning of another year and finally I have received enough separate promptings to take action and restart my blog. While quite separately I had determined that my words for 2016 were: REVIVE and PERSIST.

So here I am reviving my creative life and endeavouring to persist and stick at it - very early days. But here's to new year!!

What are your goal words for 2016?

Imaginative Play - Wisdom from Wednesday...

I posted the below image on Instagram today as I was inspired by the imaginative play of my 4 year old. I love how anything can become something else. This is her boat with her passengers on board and her paddling stick.

For my 4 year old everything has limitless potential. It has it's intended function and then the function that she creates. Nothing is too crazy an idea. A piece of paper, even the tiniest scrap of her 'snippings' can become almost anything.

Imagine a world where a clothes basket can one minute be a boat to take passengers on a journey and the next be a home for your pet dog 'Wags'. Imagine a world where you can have endless fun running around on the lawn dragging a branch back and forth (I really wish I had video'd it now) and the next be sitting under it as your umbrella protected from the rain storm, while the sun still shines. Unending possibilities. Everything having limitless potential.

What happens to us as adults? When do we lose the ability to look at stuff (situations and circumstances) and see unending possibilities? When do we stop believing in limitless potential?

What would our lives look like if we still participated in imaginative play? Would that dysfunctional relationship look any different if we believed in unending possibilities and the limitless potential of people? Would we enjoy our 9-5 more if we took the principles of imaginative play and applied them? Would we find adventure in our day to day lives if we let our imagination take us places a little more frequently.

I'm not sure. But it struck me today that it was worth a try!! I want to view my world with fresh eyes, the eyes of a child, and again wholeheartedly believe in the limitless potential and unending possibilities of anything and everything and everyone - to the point where my actions might reflect this core belief. What about you?

Thought for Thursday - Never forget what moves you!!!

Today I heard a really great quote...

“To forgive is wisdom, to forget is genius.”
― Joyce Cary

And in lots of ways I totally agree. My bad memory, or the grace I have received that has caused me to forget, has allowed me over the years to move on from a lot of things. As a result I am fortunate that I, in some areas bear far less scars,  than if I had remembered. Forgetting sometimes is the best medicine to living a kre8ive life as it means you are not held somewhere you don't want to stay.

At the same time, and yes get ready for what is going to appear to be a contradiction,  sometime the best thing we can do for our Kre8ive Journey is to remember. Too often we forget all those things that are most important to us. We allow the NORMAL everyday life to crowd out those things that we hold most dear.

Today I was reminded to NEVER Forget what moves me!!!!! This was a fabulous reminder, and very timely too. As if as a confirmation of this thought I received images of paintings I completed nearly three years ago, hanging in their new finished home... a home for orphaned children in Rwanda.

NEVER forget what moves you!

New Book - Junk Genius....

I love friends that just know you so well. This is a new book that one of my favourite people gave me recently. I am totally loving just perusing this book. I feel filled up as I look over the projects in this book.

I am the revamp queen and the thought of taking discarded items and turning them into something new totally flicks my switch. As I look through the pages I can feel the creative juices flowing.

I don't know about you but I need more things in my life that give me that buzz on the inside. The excitement about my next project... There are lots and lots of ideas floating around my head. Watch this space for what might birth from spending time in the pages of this book.

POTENTIAL trapped within resistance....

Can't believe it has been over six months since my last post. Time doesn't stand still does it? Well I feel like I have missed out on so much and have so much to catch up on.  As has been the way for many years now my Kre8ive Journey has taken some bumps and some turns in the road. Most of the Kre8ive battles I have fought however have been in my mind, as usual. But as of today I am back and keen to create and actively document my learnings and Kre8ive travels.

So what has happened in 6 months: Well probably my biggest news is that I am pregnant with 7 weeks to go before I take on my biggest Kre8ive role - Mother of Two. Christmas came and went - it was lovely which is always a bonus. Today I even gave myself some time to actively undertake my creative pursuits, not something I have given myself permission to do for sometime. My first child has turn 4 and is growing up ever so fast. I too have had another birthday apparently making me another year wiser!

With the thought that I may have gained some new wisdom over the last six months I wanted to share a quote that has marked my year so far and one that I hope will remain an inspiration and a kick in the pants for the rest of 2013 and beyond.....

Each of us are two people:
REALITY and POTENTIAL
trapped within resistance...

The Picker Sisters - What is your Inspiration Wednesday (only it was on Thursday)

I was struggling for inspiration this week until two of my friends SMS'd me this evening to ask me if I had seen the Picker Sisters which aired tonight 8:30- 9:30pm on GEM.

OMG I am not sure if these ladies are old news in Australia or not. If they are I apologies for my belated enthusiasm. But I am hooked and devastated at the same time. As it appears after my hunt of the TV guide that they were either the only episodes to be aired or the last episodes to be aired. If they are the latter that would be totally expected as I am typical a late adopter of things.

I love these ladies, their designs and the life they are creating for themselves. This is so close to my dream life that I am having a difficult time NOT being green with envy.

If you haven't seen the Picker Sister's on TV I am sorry - they are awesome. You can check them out on facebook . I love what they do with old stuff.

Oh May some of their repurposing/ recreating/ upcycling mojo rub off on me!

What's your inspiration Wednesday...

A cup of Earl Grey, in a gorgeous cup, while sitting on a vintage wicker lounge and flicking through some great mags, which were a gift from a wonderful friend.  Sweet sweet moments!!!!

What's your inspiration Wednesday - Soul Surfer

Just watched Soul Surfer - the story of Bethany Hamilton the teenage surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack at the beginning of her surfing career. Her story is amazing. The movie itself is PG and a little cheesy but it is her story that is the inspiration anyway. Such determination!

What's your inspiration Wednesday: fellow blogger

Well this week my inspiration has definitely been all my fellow up-cyclers of old furniture but particularly Rita at Curbside Creations. She was my original motivation and inspiration many months ago to really seriously start playing with furniture restoration.

Here are some of my recently completed projects- not all have their before photos cause I tend to get all excited and just get started then remember I have not taken a before photo. As with most of my furniture restorations these are for Lotus Interiors and will soon be used in a makeover for women and children who have fled domestic violence. I was also luck with these restorations to have the Lotus ladies help me out with a lot of the time consuming preparation work (sanding, cleaning and first coats).

Thanks again Lotus Interiors ladies you are also my inspiration for today.

Profound insight from a child artist - What's your inspiration Wednesday...

Last weekend I checked out Operation Art 2011 at the Armory Gallery in Newington Armory and saw some fabulous works by child artists. This piece was my favourite as the artist demonstrated wisdom well beyond his years.

Thought for Thursday - You're a gift...

I heard an interesting thought today and I loved it. I loved it so much that I have even got over my blogging slackness to rejoin the land of blog, to share it with you.

I was listening to a lady sharing makeup tips (that's right makeup tips) and she said something that I thought was so very profound. She said something like this:  "Doing your make up and generally making an effort with our appearance was like putting a ribbon on a gift. With out the ribbon the box is still a gift but with the ribbon it is so much more appealing and inviting and exciting".

As a Mum there are days where the notion of making an effort with my appearance seems all to hard. And there have been many days where I would have much rathered stay in my PJ's, and I only have one child. But since the very first week I brought 'Button' home from the hospital I made a commitment to myself that everyday I would get up, shower, put my makeup on and try to make a little effort. I am so thankful that I did. I know that some days the only thing that kept me from staying in bed all day was the fact that I had got up and wash and done my hair.

Now before I get a bunch of comments saying that beauty does not depend on our make up and hair being done. Let me just say I TOTALLY agree with you. This thought had nothing to do with beauty. The heart behind this thought that I loved, was self respect and seeing ourselves as gifts in the lives of others. As well as the reality that when we make some effort with our appearance, we feel better about ourselves. It can give us more confidence. This allows us to be able to look past a lot of our short comings long enough that we might decide not to allow them to be a the barrier that would usually stop us from giving of our selves to others.

My personal view is that I was put here on this earth to invest and give into the life of others. When I do I find out more about me and who I am and I get the greatest opportunity to utilise my gifts and abilities. But the thing that is my greatest barrier to doing this is my own insecurities and fears about myself.

I love the thought that just by respecting myself a little and taking a little time to do my hair and makeup and putting on a nice little ensemble I am putting a bow on a gift (Me) for those in my world. I thought that was a cool idea, how about you?

Mobilsed Women - What's your inspiration Wednesday...

Well it is Thursday but I totally wanted to share with you Wednesday's (yesterday's) inspiration. I had a fabulous night last night with a group of women (around 60 in all) who came together to have coffee and cake and do something simple for their local community. These ladies brought toiletry items such as: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand cream, exfoliating gloves, nail polish, lip gloss, bronzer and mascara and got busy creating hampers for the clients of Lotus Interiors. I was so blown away that they would want to come along side the work that we are doing and bless strangers.

The coolest part is that the ladies were asked to simply bring one or two items. Here is the fruits of their handy work, and this is only half of the hampers they created.

Forty hampers later we had run out of cellophane, and ribbon and still had toiletries left over. That is the power of a few women mobilised behind a cause. It was a simply contribution but it will make an impact as women receive these gifts from strangers, telling them that they believe in them and wanted to bless them with a gift just for themselves.

I love women who Shout it Louder!!!
